Quick Peek

In the early 1990s, the proliferation of imported right hand drive vehicles saw a clear favorite among used car buyers. Converted units of the Toyota HiAce roamed the streets and highways as it showcased its people-mover design to appreciative Filipinos.

The Filipinos’ penchant for keeping the family as close as possible has permeated to their choice of vehicle. The Toyota HiAce is one such mode of transportation that not only satisfies this cultural trait of preserving family, but has also been an instrumental role player in the recovery of the country’s economy through cargo and people transport.

Through three generations, the HiAce has become the backbone of many industries in the country. Transporting people from the city to points outside the capital and doing so comfortably has endeared the Hiace brand with Filipinos. Tourism companies have relief on h

From its utilitarian roots, the HiAce has embraced its role as a people carrier with more upscale interiors through the years. Smoother, more powerful engines and refined interiors have transformed the HiAce’s purpose without actually sacrificing its DNA.

The Right Spec for You

Model Year 1995 - 4th Generation Facelift, Price range: Php 90,000 - Php 150,000

So in 1995, Toyota finally brought in the recently face-lifted version of the 4th-generation HiAce to answer this growing demand from the market. This legitimized Toyota’s van business in the country.

Model Year 1997 Facelift, Price range: Php 120,000 - Php 160,000

Then in 1997, two more new variants to the mix were added - the business oriented 15-seater and the family van-oriented 13-seater.

Model Year 1999 Facelift, Price range: Php 150,000 - Php 180,000

By 1999, the HiAce 3.0 Grandia and 2.0 GL petrol variants were launched. Also introduced that year was the HiAce Commuter, a van meant for business applications. The nameplate underwent another round of facelifts this year.

Model Year 2000 Super Grandia, Price range: Php 100,000 - Php 180,000

Come September 2000, the top of the line 3.0 inline-4 diesel HiAce Super Grandia became available. The end of the fourth generation HiAce series saw the arrival of  the Japan-spec Super Grandia J.

Model Year 2005 - 2014, Price range: Php 670,000 - Php 1,800,000

In 2005, the Philippine market welcomed the fifth-generation HiAce. New 2.5-liter D-4D diesel engines powered the HiAce along with gasoline-fed variants. In 2006, the new top ranging HiAce Super Grandia was launched. It became the first HiAce in the Philippines with an automatic transmission.

The larger, more boxy HiAce saw service in various transport industries such as hotel, tourism , shuttle services, school bus and logistics transport through the succeeding years.

Model Year 2015 Super Grandia LXV

By 2015, the 10-seater Super Grandia LXV, which featured rear captain’s chairs and carpeted flooring, was added to the lineup. It was characterized by its higher roof which allowed average-height passengers to actually stand inside the van. A high-end audio system and 15-inch alloy wheels added flair to the package.

Model Year 2019 - Sixth Generation

Because of the huge success of the HiAce in the Philippines, Toyota decided to debut the sixth-generation HiAce in the country. Now featuring a protruding hood area where the engine now resides, the current generation has evolved into a more purpose-built vehicle. Up to 17 people can now be carried in the Commuter variant as it functions like a mini-bus.

What to expect when purchasing a Toyota Hiace

Deciding to acquire a HiAce can be a daunting task. With the sheer number of variants and changing specifications over the years, it is close to impossible to determine the correct spec for a given year model.

However, you only need to limit yourself to locally sold units, those with license plates that begine with B, R, X should be considered with a grain of salt.  The are often priced at ridiculously low prices, and for a reason. The converted HiAce units from Subic, Cebu, and even Cagayan have been compromised in safety so it might be more prudent to not include these in your shortlist.

Given that fifth-generation 2005 model units and up offer more space and refinement, these should be considered seriously, budget permitting.

But if you choose earlier examples, take extra time to inspect the vehicle thoroughly. Not only with the condition of the interiors, as many HiAce units have reached six digits on their odometers by now. Many spew out thick black smoke as well as the diesel engines may have lost some efficiency along the way due to overuse or lack of proper maintenance. Either the injectors are clogged and may require refurbishment or replacement. These are potential expenses that you should factor into your budget.

Early models, which have their engines located underneath the front seats, may also experience vibrations and rough idling. Again, some points to haggle with eventually.

For the sixth-generation HiAce, riding comfort was improved to provide passengers a more secure and relaxing ride.  Creature comforts such as USB chargers and individual seats with dedicated 3-point seatbelts adorn the new model’s interiors, elevating safety and style.

Front airbags, Anti-lock Brake Systems, Vehicle Stability Control and even Hill-Start Assist can now be found in the sixth generation HiAce. All trim levels are powered by the 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine which is mated to either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission.

Larger, more imposing on the road, yet even more versatile and comfortable. This is the legacy of the HiAce nameplate through the years.

The sixth-generation HiAce is currently offered in 4 trim levels: the 15-seater Commuter; the 12-seater GL Grandia Monotone and Two-tone; the 14-seater GL Grandia Tourer; and the 10-seater Super Grandia. Underneath each are choices transmission and details such as leather seats and amenities.

Of course, with the improvements in build quality, ride comfort, specifications and performance, pricing has gone up for brand new units. The cheapest brand new HiAce Commuter Deluxe now costs Php 1,649,000. The previous generation Commuter is still available for Php 1,379,000 while the Cargo variant comes in at Php 1,101,000.

The most expensive current model HiAce now? It is the HiAce Super Grandia Elite at Php 3,013,000.

All the more compelling now to seek a pre-loved example here on Carousell Autos, right? With a wide selection of HiAce units to choose from, there is surely one that will be right for you. Ask the seller all the questions you need answered. Keep tabs of your shortlist so you can really ferret out the information that will lead you to an intelligent decision. These are just some of the ways Carousell Autos makes the car-buying experience engaging and worthwhile for you.
