WHAT ARE THE AVERAGE PRICES OF THE TOYOTA INNOVA MODELS?

As an MPV that utilized Toyota’s then newly introduced IMV platform, the Innova led the market in providing customers a rugged yet comfortable ride for 6 to 7 people. Despite the ladder frame platform, its ride was oddly sedan-like owing to its double-wishbone front suspension and 4-link suspension with coil springs at the rear. The Innova's versatility allowed it to be used not only by families but also by businesses that demanded a stylish hauler. Fleet  and commercial utility vehicle accounts  made full use of its versatile cargo and people carrying capabilities.

Model Year 2005 - 2007 First Generation Toyota Innova: Price range Php 300,000 to Php 400,000

The Toyota Innova has been a mainstay of the Japanese brand in the Multi Purpose Vehicle segment since 2005. These early models were initially released with a 2.5-liter Common Rail Diesel Injected engine and a 4-speed automatic transmission, it replaced the venerable Revo as a family hauler and workhorse in the Philippine market.

Derived from the word, “Innovation”, the Innova’s name represented everything new and groundbreaking in what was once the Asian Utility Vehicle category. Gone was the boxy profile of the old Revo as the Innova raised the commercial vehicle design game with its streamlined looks.

Model Year 2008 - 2011: Price range Php 390,000 to  Php 500,000

By 2008, a facelift involving new bumpers, front grill and tail lamps on its exterior. While an upgraded CD in-dash player, climate control air conditioning and a multi-information display completed the spec sheet inside.

This was also the first time the 2.0-Liter 1TR gasoline engine became an option in the E trim of the lineup. The Innova Sport Runner, a body kit equipped version of the Innova, also became available with the 2.5-Liter Diesel under the hood.

Model Year 2012 - 2013: Price range Php 500,000 to Php 600,000

In 2012, another facelift saw an updated grille with a more aggressive headlamp design. A new wheel design complemented chrome fittings on the exterior. Inside, a new steering wheel with audio controls that operated the built-in audio system was introduced.

Model Year 2014-2015: Price range Php 580,000 to Php 700,000

For 2014, more design updates were done on the bumpers and the rear tailgate. A new 4-spoke steering wheel enhanced by wood trims adorned the interior as new features like GPS navigation became standard in the top V trim.

The Innova reached a milestone in 2015 with the millionth Innova sold in the country. To commemorate this, Toyota Philippines released a limited edition unit with an exclusive new color and two-toned seats.

MY 2016-2020 Second Generation Toyota Innova

2016 saw the launch of the second generation Toyota Innova in the Philippines. Still utilizing the IMV platform that it shares with the Fortuner and Hilux, the Innova became bigger in almost every dimension.

The second generation Innova was introduced with a detuned version of the 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV DOHC diesel with Variable Nozzle Turbocharger and Intercooler. This is similar to the engine  used in the Hilux and Fortuner. With 171 PS and 360 Nm of torque, it is a significant improvement from the original diesel mill of the Innova that gives it added performance and efficiency. While a new six-speed automatic also debuted to improve driving dynamics and fuel economy.

New LED headlights with Daytime Running Lights, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, updated the looks and functionality of the Innova. Electronic Stability Control became standard.

Model Year 2021 - present

The 2021-spec Innova features a host of improvements such as ambient lighting, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility in the V, G and E grades. Driving-wise, Hill Start Assist and Electronic Stability Control are now standard across the range. Both V and G trims also get speed sensing door locks and a reverse camera.

To simplify the lineup, the gasoline engine has been retired and only the diesel mill can be found in all trims.

WHAT ARE THE SPECS OF TOYOTA INNOVA TO CONSIDER?

The Innova was released initially in 4 trims: the entry-level J, the mid-level E with power features, airbags and a diesel engine, the mid-level G which was essentially the E but with leather seats and interior accents, and the top-of-the-line V with automatic transmission, captain’s  chairs and a premium sound system. This model and trim level classification system is still in use today.

For 2021, a choice of either six speed automatic transmission or 5-speed manual transmission filled up the trim selections for  E and G variants. While the J comes only with a manual gearbox in contrast to the V which only is equipped with the diesel engine and an automatic transmission combo. G and V models get exterior chrome trimmings, leather and wood steering wheels, Noble brown fabric, ambient lighting, seat back tables, a touchscreen infotainment system, and 7 airbags.

Unique to the V line since its introduction are captain’s seats in the second row. This makes it effectively a more comfortable and cozy 6-seater than a claimed 7-seater. For 2021, along with LED headlamps, fog lamps and Daytime Running Lights and a set of 17-inch wheels, the Innova V leads the range in terms of spec and class.

SHOULD YOU BUY A TOYOTA INNOVA IN PHILIPPINES?

Toyota models command  a good reputation in the used car market. They are continuously in high demand. Many buyers prefer them over more exotic brands because of their perceived reliability and easy access to parts. And banks have a penchant for Toyota models because they know these would be easier to resell if a loan goes sour.

The Toyota Innova remains to be a reliable and versatile vehicle that fulfils most of the needs of families and small businesses. As a Multi-Purpose Vehicle, it set the standard on how to balance comfort with function. With its solid Toyota IMV ladder frame underpinnings, the Innova has proven that it can withstand the daily grind without being too rugged and masculine like its Hilux and Fortuner brothers.

Banks are open to extending loans for vehicles that are 2006 models and up. Up to 50% of the vehicle’s value can be shouldered by the bank for this year model with loan durations lasting from 12 to 18 or 24 months.

For 2007 to 2009 Innovas, banks can take on around 60% of the car’s appraised value with a loan period of up to 36 months. While up to 65% of the appraised value of 2010 to 2012 model year Innovas can be taken on by banks.

Model year 2013 and newer vehicles can enjoy up to 70% of their value assumed by the bank at up to a 48-month period. Interest rates can be as low as 13% for newer vehicles or up to close to 61% for 2012 units.

Lending companies also accommodate car loans and approved loans faster but generally have higher interest rates for you to contend with.

WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT FROM TOYOTA INNOVA IN 2021?

Toyota Motor Philippines recently launched the 2021 Innova last February. With a host of design and functional improvements, it continues to be a relevant choice for a market that looks for the comforts of a luxurious people carrier while having the option to rough and tumble with a load of cargo for work or business when needed.

The Innova redefined the MPV category with its gorgeous styling, supple ride, and its bevy of amenities that make it a pleasure to ride in. But it did not abandon the versatility of a true Multi-Purpose Vehicle from which it was conceived.

If you are in the market for an all-around vehicle that is reliable as it is comfortable, the Innova in all its various permutations over the years, can be the ride you are looking for.
