Selling! Scarce! Php 8,500.00 1780 Milan Early Restrike Thaler Reference: Hafner H36a (ca. 1815-1828) "Holy Roman Empire" Features the familiar right-facing effigy of Maria Theresa of Austria; front, and the Habsburg double-headed eagle coat of arms representing the conjoined Imperial territories of the east and west lands; back. Although almost all thalers bearing Her Imperial Majesty's portrait are modern restrikes, this particular piece was minted much closer to her reign. Struck at the Milan mint between approximately 1815 and 1828, it was intended for trade in parts of Northern Africa and the Middle East, where the thaler had already been widely accepted as currency for around 50 years. These coins were produced under her grandson, Emperor Francis II (I of Austria), following Napoleon's defeat and the return of the Italian territories of Milan and Venice to Austrian rule.
