Original 1900 antique map of the Philippines, prepared from cartographic work undertaken in Manila in 1899 under the direction of Fr. José Algué, S.J., Director of the Manila Observatory, and subsequently published in Washington in 1900 by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, Government Printing Office. The maps were produced during an extraordinary transitional period in Philippine history, immediately following the end of Spanish rule and at the beginning of the American period. They incorporated geographical information accumulated by the Jesuits together with information obtained from other religious orders, residents, travelers, and explorers. The U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey subsequently prepared the material for publication, with some maps redrawn to standardize their scale and projection. Over 125 years old, this is a genuine period map representing the state of geographical knowledge of the Philippines at the turn of the 20th century—not a modern reproduction. An excellent piece for collectors of Filipiniana, antique Philippine maps, Manila Observatory material, Jesuit history, and Spanish/American colonial-era Philippine history. Date: 1900 Cartographic work: Manila, 1899 Direction: Fr. José Algué, S.J. Publication: U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, Washington, 1900 Please refer to the photographs for the condition of the particular map offered.
