Exceptional antiquarian book: the first edition of Ninay (Costumbres filipinas) by Alejandro Paterno, published in Madrid in 1885 by Imprenta de Fortanet. Considered the first novel written by a Filipino author, a unicum for the Spanish language and a foundational work of Philippine literature. ⚠️ Copy WITHOUT its original cover (see condition). Surviving copies of this first edition are extremely rare: the Philippine Revolution (1896-1898), the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), the tropical climate and the bombing of Manila (1945) destroyed much of the original print run. Ideal for collectors, bibliophiles, enthusiasts of Spanish colonial and Southeast Asian history, and for institutions and researchers in Philippine and Hispanic literature! 🖼️ Details: 📖 Title: Ninay (Costumbres filipinas) ✍️ Author: Alejandro Paterno (1857-1911) 📜 Edition: first edition, 1885 📍 Madrid, Imprenta de Fortanet, calle de la Libertad, no. 29 🌏 Language: Spanish 📚 Content: a tale of Philippine customs, with footnotes and chapters on the Pasiám (traditional funeral wake) 🔤 Dedication: “A mi querido padre” printed in baybayin (pre-colonial Philippine script) with Spanish translation, signed Pedro Alejandro Molo Paterno 🔍 Condition: 📕 WITHOUT THE ORIGINAL COVER: softbound copy, protected by a modern cream cardboard cover (Banco Banif logo) 📘 “Ninay” handwritten on the spine 📗 Yellowed, evenly aged paper; visible stitching and wear to the binding 📙 Bookseller’s stamp (“Compra-Venta, Sevilla”) and pencil annotation on the title page 📄 Complete, legible text; some foxing and minor marks 👉 Please study the photos carefully: they are part of the description. 📦 Careful, secure shipping with reinforced packaging. Questions or extra photos: just ask.
