What if Astro Boy were reimagined as an enthusiastic young robot living in a bizarre world of giant robots, videogames, pizza, villains, and general mechanical mayhem? Meet Reggie-12, Brian Ralph’s wonderfully eccentric tribute to the classic Japanese adventure manga tradition of Osamu Tezuka. Originally appearing in the pages of Giant Robot magazine, Reggie-12 takes the familiar idea of the heroic boy robot and gives it a distinctly offbeat American-comics makeover. Reggie is a young robot created by the well-meaning but absent-minded Professor Tinkerton. Rather than being a solitary super-hero, however, Reggie is surrounded by an entertaining cast of misfits, including his bumbling robot companion Casper and a self-centered, wisecracking cat. Together they find themselves involved in one ridiculous adventure after another. The stories deliberately play with the conventions of classic manga and Saturday-morning adventure cartoons. Reggie may possess heroic abilities, but he is still essentially a kid—and his adventures are just as likely to involve pizza, video games and petty squabbles as they are giant robots and dangerous villains. The result is a wonderfully humorous contrast between the epic scale of Japanese robot adventures and the mundane concerns of everyday life. Ralph’s artwork is particularly distinctive. His deceptively simple, cartoon-like figures are combined with heavily textured backgrounds and expressive, energetic layouts. The book’s two-color artwork gives the entire collection a deliberately retro, graphic quality that complements its manga and animation influences. For fans of Astro Boy, classic manga, alternative comics and offbeat science-fiction humor, Reggie-12 is a charming and unusual little gem. It is simultaneously a loving homage to Osamu Tezuka’s robot adventures and a parody of the genre, filtered through Brian Ralph’s unmistakably quirky storytelling style.
